Is the old one piece garage door a thing of the past?

Is the old one piece garage door a thing of the past?

All things change and evolve over time and the garage door is no different. Many of the old style wood tilt up doors are being replaced by steel sectional roll up doors. Both styles have their pros and cons but one thing that they both share is the importance of having the garage door installed and maintained by a garage door professional.

In our opinion, this is more important with an older one piece garage door system. Just like the doors themselves, professionals with extensive knowledge and experience with these doors are getting older and harder to come by. As these professionals retire and leave the business, they are being replaced by new comers who have less experience with one piece tilt up doors only because they come in contact with them so infrequently.

Even worse than hiring a garage door professional with little to no experience with these extremely heavy and sometimes dangerous doors, is hiring a handyman or contractor to do garage door repairs. Of course there are tasks in and around the garage door that many handymen and even home owners can tackle on their own. However, there are some major repairs that should only be done by a qualified garage door professional.

As an example, our company was recently called out to a home with a one piece tilt up garage door. The door was stuck in the open position and the home owner had no way of closing the door. This left the garage and ultimately the home not secured.

Improper alteration caused damage to arm bracket

Upon inspection, the technician realized that an integral part of the arm bracket had been altered by someone who had little to no knowledge of the mechanics of a one piece door. This alteration had weakened and eventually broken the entire bracket which left the door inoperable. It was a miracle that the entire door had not crashed down and harmed anything anyone.
